Maundy Thursday Service of Holy Communion & Tenebrae

April 21, 2019 (Special Service) | Maundy Thursday

Bible Verses: 1 Corinthians 11:23-19; John 13:1-17, 34-35

This evening focused on two important events. First, we observed a special Communion service in memory of Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples. Second, Jesus’ self-giving act for our salvation was observed through Tenebrae, a ritual in which the gradual extinguishing of the candles occurs while the story of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion is read.

Palm Sunday is a jubilant day indeed. We wave our palm branches and shout “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” But there is another side as well: Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem is a journey toward is death. Can we hold onto this ambiguity and find the blessing therein?

Rabbi Hal Schevitz is the rabbi of Congregation Or Atid, serving the synagogue since July 2016. He was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, attended the University of Maryland at College Park, and later earned a Masters of Arts in Jewish Education and a Masters of Arts in Jewish Studies, from Baltimore Hebrew University. Rabbi Hal was ordained at the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts in June, 2013. Before coming to Or Atid, he served as the assistant rabbi of Congregation Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis, Indiana, a dual-affiliated Conservative-Reconstructionist synagogue.

Rabbi Hal has been teaching in some capacity for over 15 years, and is working to bring his energy, enthusiasm, and love of Jewish living to Or Atid. Torah, in its most literal sense of “instruction,” is his passion as both a student and a teacher, paving the way toward the educational experiences for understanding our people’s collective myths and memories, and experiencing ritual opportunities and social responsibilities that make our lives meaningful. It is his goal to guide every person to find modern relevance in our ancient texts, connecting themselves to a tradition that has been evolving for thousands of years. He has been married to his wife Jena since 2012 and they are the proud parents of their two daughters, Naomi, who is 3, and Arielle, who is 9 months old.

Rev. James H. Blay is a Liberian native. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Christianity from Mercer University in Macon Georgia, and a Master of Divinity from McAfee School of Theology, Mercer University, Atlanta, Georgia. He is the former Coordinator for Student Affairs, and former Coordinator for Servant Leadership, at the Ricks Institute, Virginia, Liberia. Rev. Blay served as the Vice President for Administration at the Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary. He has a deep passion for Practical Theology and Missions. He has an extensive background working in various capacities as minister to youth and young adults. He loves God and loves people.

This Sunday we celebrate Martha Stearns Marshall Month of Preaching. Since 2007, the month of February has been recognized by Baptist Women in Ministry (BWIM) and partner churches as a time to invite women in ministry to preach. This annual event encourages our church and others to publicly voice our support of women in ministry, and celebrate the call and gifts of women.

Sue and her husband, Greg, are CBF Field Personnel located in Fredericksburg and run LUCHA Ministries.

TFC-Adults: “A Single Garment of Destiny: The Interconnectedness of Race and Theatre in RVA” with Bruce Miller

Beginning with Moses Hoffheimer’s determination to create RVA’s first integrated theatre post Reconstruction in 1911, continuing through Barksdale Theatre’s commitment to break the back of Virginia’s Jim Crow laws at Hanover Tavern in 1953, and carrying through Theatre IV’s (now Virginia Rep’s) election of Virginia’s first African American Board presidents, professional theatres in Central Virginia have led the way in racial reconciliation.

Bruce Miller is Founding Producer at Virginia Repertory Theatre. He served as Artistic Director of Theatre IV and Barksdale Theatre before overseeing their merger to form Virginia Rep. He currently leads Virginia Rep’s nationally acclaimed Community Health and Wellness programs.
