Roses and Thorns
July 15, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Psalm 24; 2 Corinthians 12:2-10 | Daniel Glaze
Attend a church conference (especially when there are pastors around!) and you’re bound to hear some boasting. Paul is clear that such boasting is not only inappropriate, but perhaps damaging to our witness as people of faith. Instead of boasting in strength, Paul says, let us see our weaknesses as opportunities for God’s love to be revealed.
Too Comfortable with Christ?
July 8, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Psalm 48:9-14; Mark 6:1-13 | Daniel Glaze
Best I can tell, we’re neither a new church or an old one. There are many churches founded years, even centuries, before River Road, and many who’ve cropped up in the last several years. Regardless, we’ve been doing church together a long while. We’ve been hearing the same Jesus stories for 72 years. Like the people in Nazareth from today’s gospel reading, are we too comfortable with Christ to hear his voice anew?
Can Grief be Good?
July 1, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Psalm 30:1-5; Mark 5:21-34 | Daniel Glaze
Grief can be good—especially when it drives us to God. Grief is good when it reminds us we depend on God and God alone for life. And when this unnamed woman brings her grief to Jesus, he doesn’t just heal her, he calls her brings her into his family by calling her “daughter.” (not a minor detail).
Peace…Be Still
June 24, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Psalm 107:1-3, 23-30; Mark 4:35-41 | Daniel Glaze
As we seek to be ministers in this community and witnesses for Jesus Christ, we will no doubt encounter children of God facing a fierce storm. (Maybe we are the ones facing the storm). Our job is not to fix whatever is broken in their life. Instead, we can stand with persons in midst of the storm and proclaim with Christ, “Peace, be still.”
Sometimes it’s the Little Things
June 17, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Mark 4:26-34 | Daniel Glaze
“The Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed—smallest of all the seeds on earth. But when it grows up it becomes the greatest of all shrubs.” You never know when the smallest little seed will sprout into something remarkably beautiful.
Are You Listening?
June 10, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: 1 Samuel 3:1-20; 2 Corinthians 4:5-12 | Libby Grammer
Sometimes God calls us audibly like Samuel, sometimes quietly in a whisper, sometimes through others. Are we listening to the many ways God is speaking? Are we afraid to listen? Paul reminds the Corinthian church that nothing can separate us from God’s love and grace. We have no need to fear God’s call and many reasons to listen and respond in faith.
Breaking the Rules
June 3, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Mark 2:23-3:6 | Daniel Glaze

Holy Holy Holy
May 27, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Romans 8:14-17; Isaiah 6:1-8 | Daniel Glaze
We will consider together the experience of Isaiah that Sabbath morning many years ago. During what sounds like a routine worship service, Isaiah had a vision: “I saw the Lord sitting on a throne.” Isaiah knew something incredible was happening, for “the pivots on the thresholds shook…and the house filled with smoke.” Might Isaiah’s experience in worship be a model for us?
Happy birthday, Church! Do you still speak Gospelish?
May 20, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Acts 2:1-21; John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 | Lubos Dzuriak
Mr. Lubos Dzuriak, our 2017 – 2018 Pastoral Intern, and his wife Diana as our guest pianist. Lubos and Diana, natives of Slovakia, are parents to four children: Naomi, Tobi, Eli, and Adela. God is re-creating the People of God on Pentecost; God is creating the Church on Pentecost. God spoke the language we ALL (nations/people) can understand first – in Jesus Christ (by example) and second in native languages. The language of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is love primarily… embracing ALL (no walls/difference anymore), we are one in Christ. It is God through the Holy Spirit that speaks through us (in spite of our imperfection). We are invited to join God’s Spirit in God’s work. We are called to make disciples by speaking the language of God = “Gospelish”… always.
That They May Be One
May 13, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Acts 1:1-11; John 17:6-19 | Daniel Glaze
“That they may be one” (John 6:11). I’m not so sure we’re any more unified than when Jesus initially prayed this prayer. Was Jesus wasting his breath, or is unity possible for his followers today?
TFC-Adults: Panama Mission Trip Report
May 9, 2018 (Wednesday Night) | Panama Mission Team
RRCB’s long-term partnership with the Fundación Cristiana Médico Social (Medical-Social Christian Foundation) in Panama continues to provide medical and dental care to indigenous populations, and this year, the team expanded to include a construction team as well! Come hear from our team and missionary partner Sue Smith about this wonderful trip that was taken February 3-11, 2018!
Trip Information:
From February 3-11, 2018, River Road Church, Baptist continued our mission to Panama to serve with the Fundación Cristiana Médico Social (Medical Social Christian Foundation) to provide medical and dental clinics to the Embera Indians and others in need along the Panama Canal region in Gamboa and Chepo. This year we also started a construction mission. The project was working with a Kuna indigenous congregation that has a feeding program for local kids, serving lunch to around 90 kids from the community on Sundays. The program operates on the back side of the church, under a partial roof, with no walls. We helped expand the area where the kids are fed.
The team is partnered with three other churches and 19 people led by co-team leaders Judy Collins, Joe Teefey, and CBF Missionary Sue Smith. Other team members from RRCB included: Libby Grammer, Norma Hays, John Heisler, Bonnie Livick, Emily Sumner, Bill Rusher, Anne Rusher, and Geoff Sundberg.
Complete Joy
May 6, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Psalm 98; John 15:9-17 | Daniel Glaze
Complete Joy may strike us as an oxymoron (like jumbo shrimp or hot chili), but Jesus is clear that our joy comes through our connectedness—to God and one another.

Agapomen Allelus
April 29, 2018 (Sunday Morning) | Daniel Glaze
Sometimes we make Christianity all about having a personal relationship with Jesus. As important as that is, that’s only part of it. We must love God and love other people. You can’t do just one—both are required. Somehow we have to learn that other people matter.
TFC-Adults: Baptist Roots: Exploring Our Spiritual Family Tree and Why It Matters with Nathan Taylor, Executive Director, Virginia Baptist Historical Society
April 25, 2018 (Wednesday Night) | Nathan Taylor
Have you ever wondered what it means to call ourselves a “Baptist” church? Whether you grew up Baptist, married a Baptist, or joined us later in life from another tradition, we’ll explore the origins of Baptists and discuss the convictions that came to characterize this broad movement of Protestant dissenters. In so doing, we also will observe the relevance of this “spiritual DNA” to the present moment, while receiving a brief update on the work of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society and the Center for Baptist Heritage & Studies.
Love in Truth and Action
April 22, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: 1 John 3:16-24; John 10:11-18 | Daniel Glaze
The world is wondering—should I give the church a chance? How will I know they are true followers of Christ? The world will know we are Christians not by our prayers, not by our speech, but by our love. First John says, Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. The world will want to join us not when we speak of our love for one another, but when we act it out.
TFC-Adults: 1968 — The year that changed our nation (and also many of us) by Tom Graves
April 18, 2018 (Wednesday Night) | Tom Graves
This was a year of war, assassinations, riots, protests, and political turmoil, which changed our nation and altered the lives of many of us.
Youth Sunday Sermons: “Do Not Worry” Matthew 6:25-34
April 15, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Psalm 100; Matthew 6:25-34 | Zach Bostic, Meg Rooney, Joey Mistretta
Youth and children are often seen solely as the future of the church, but they are really a part of the present church. This Sunday, may we see our youth not as performers on a stage wanting approval, but as persons who will lead us in worship. May we worship God together, as we do each Sunday.

“The Way to Emmaus” by Jaromir Weinberger — Victoria Jackson, soprano
April 8, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: 1 Corinthians 5b-8; Luke 24:13-32 | Victoria Jackson, soprano
This Sunday’s worship will feature the solo cantata, “The Way to Emmaus” by the Czech-born Jarmoir Weinberger (1896-1967). This composer studied at the Prague Conservatory, and later in Leipzig with Max Reger. After having fled the Nazis, he settled in New York City in 1939, and soon became an American citizen. “The Way to Emmaus” is a breathtaking setting of Luke 24:12-31, the story of the journey of the two disciples towards Emmaus with Jesus, whom they finally recognize “in the breaking of the bread. The soloist is soprano, Victoria Jackson.
Victoria Jackson started her vocal training in 2009 at Suitland High School Center of Visual and Performing Arts in Maryland. Victoria then continued her vocal training and received her B.M. in Music Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University. While at VCU, she was cast in two of VCU’s spring Opera productions. Her most recent role was La Suora Zelatrice in Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica. She participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions: Mid Atlantic Region in 2017 and was selected to move on to the National level. Currently, Victoria works at SPARC – School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community and is a member of the Richmond Symphony Chorus.
Easter is Your Story Too!
April 1, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Isaiah 25:6-9; Mark 16:1-8 | Daniel Glaze
The traditional (shorter) ending of Mark’s gospel concludes rather abruptly. Why is that? Is it possible that we are to continue the story? I’d like to explore how we see ourselves in the Easter Story and continue resurrection in our own lives and communities.
Palms, Passion, Pain, and Patience
March 25, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Psalm 51:1-12; John 12:20-33 | Daniel Glaze
Palm Sunday has another name: Passion Sunday. There is the parade, and there is the realization of where that parade leads. The parade celebrating Jesus is a triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Yes, it is celebratory, but it is also a journey to his death. We may be tempted to go from waving our palm branches to shouting “He is risen!” on Easter Sunday, but that would be a mistake. There is spiritual blessing in taking the journey with Jesus to the cross.
A New Point of View
March 18, 2018 (Sunday Morning)
Bible Verses: Psalm 51:1-12; John 12:20-33 | Libby Grammer
We are not God, and when we try to be, we fall into the pitfalls of sin. Thankfully, the nature of God is one of mercy toward us, God’s children. In the season of Lent, we focus on penitence, asking for forgiveness for sins, but we should also be deeply grateful for a God who seeks out relationship with us and offers forgiveness and grace. We are a fortunate people to worship such a God. That new point of view might make our Lenten journey a lot less about ourselves (and lack of chocolate) and a lot more about the God who seeks after us in covenant relationship.

March 14, 2018 (Wednesday Night) | Dr. Theodore T. Brown
