An appreciative congregation of River Road Church, Baptist presented to Emily Tuck its 2018 Christian Educator of the Year Award for her decades of service in Christian education and spiritual formation through teaching and education leadership. All Sunday School teachers and faculty were honored for their dedication to our church family.

May 20, 2018 (Sunday Morning)

Bible Verses: Acts 2:1-21; John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 | Lubos Dzuriak

Mr. Lubos Dzuriak, our  2017 – 2018 Pastoral Intern, and his wife Diana as our guest pianist. Lubos and Diana, natives of Slovakia, are parents to four children: Naomi, Tobi, Eli, and Adela. Lubos will graduate Saturday, May 26 from Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond with his Master of Divinity degree.

God is re-creating the People of God on Pentecost; God is creating the Church on Pentecost. God spoke the language we ALL (nations/people) can understand first – in Jesus Christ (by example) and second in native languages. The language of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is love primarily… embracing ALL (no walls/difference anymore), we are one in Christ. It is God through the Holy Spirit that speaks through us (in spite of our imperfection). We are invited to join God’s Spirit in God’s work. We are called to make disciples by speaking the language of God = “Gospelish”… always.

May 9, 2018 (Wednesday Night) | Panama Mission Team

RRCB’s long-term partnership with the Fundación Cristiana Médico Social (Medical-Social Christian Foundation) in Panama continues to provide medical and dental care to indigenous populations, and this year, the team expanded to include a construction team as well! Come hear from our team and missionary partner Sue Smith about this wonderful trip that was taken February 3-11, 2018!

Trip Information:

From February 3-11, 2018, River Road Church, Baptist continued our mission to Panama to serve with the Fundación Cristiana Médico Social (Medical Social Christian Foundation) to provide medical and dental clinics to the Embera Indians and others in need along the Panama Canal region in Gamboa and Chepo. This year we also started a construction mission. The project was working with a Kuna indigenous congregation that has a feeding program for local kids, serving lunch to around 90 kids from the community on Sundays. The program operates on the back side of the church, under a partial roof, with no walls. We helped expand the area where the kids are fed.

The team is partnered with three other churches and 19 people led by co-team leaders Judy Collins, Joe Teefey, and CBF Missionary Sue Smith. Other team members from RRCB included: Libby Grammer, Norma Hays, John Heisler, Bonnie Livick, Emily Sumner, Bill Rusher, Anne Rusher, and Geoff Sundberg.

May 2, 2018 (Wednesday Night) | Abigail Schreiner

HopeTree’s Foster Care program helps meet the needs of children and youth who require individualized care and attention in a stable, Christian family setting. Our goal is to create a foster home environment which enhances the emotional, educational, physical, social, and spiritual development of every child.  In this presentation, Abigail will share the story of HopeTree’s beginning, the impact of current ministry programs, and the many ways individuals and church groups can share God’s love with children in foster care.

Abigail Schreiner is the Foster Parent Recruiter at HopeTree Family Services.  Abigail’s main role in this position is to speak in churches throughout Virginia to raise awareness about the need for foster parents and to encourage loving families to open their homes to children in need.  Abigail is passionate about raising awareness of foster care in the community and advocating for policies that improve the child welfare system. She especially enjoys seeing the positive impact that a loving foster family can have on a child in care.

Have you ever wondered what it means to call ourselves a “Baptist” church? Whether you grew up Baptist, married a Baptist, or joined us later in life from another tradition, we’ll explore the origins of Baptists and discuss the convictions that came to characterize this broad movement of Protestant dissenters. In so doing, we also will observe the relevance of this “spiritual DNA” to the present moment, while receiving a brief update on the work of the Virginia Baptist Historical Society and the Center for Baptist Heritage & Studies.

Youth and children are often seen solely as the future of the church, but they are really a part of the present church. This Sunday, may we see our youth not as performers on a stage wanting approval, but as persons who will lead us in worship. May we worship God together, as we do each Sunday.

For 30 years CARITAS, has been helping to end the cycles of homelessness and addiction, and you, River Road Church, Baptist, have been part of that work. Join us on Wednesday night to learn about what’s new with CARITAS! You’ll learn about the 30-million-dollar project that is helping to put Richmond on the map in confronting homelessness and addiction. Find out how you as an individual and a congregation can be part of the work being done!

Tiffany Hall Terry is the Director of Community Engagement at CARITAS. As Director of Community Engagement at CARITAS, Tiffany helps to organize more than 18,000 volunteers every year. She attended Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, and graduated in 2011 from The School of Theology at Virginia Union with a Masters of Divinity.

Bible Verses: 1 Corinthians 5b-8; Luke 24:13-32 | Victoria Jackson, soprano

This Sunday’s worship will feature the solo cantata, “The Way to Emmaus” by the Czech-born Jarmoir Weinberger (1896-1967). This composer studied at the Prague Conservatory, and later in Leipzig with Max Reger. After having fled the Nazis, he settled in New York City in 1939, and soon became an American citizen. “The Way to Emmaus” is a breathtaking setting of Luke 24:12-31, the story of the journey of the two disciples towards Emmaus with Jesus, whom they finally recognize “in the breaking of the bread. The soloist is soprano, Victoria Jackson.

Victoria Jackson started her vocal training in 2009 at Suitland High School Center of Visual and Performing Arts in Maryland. Victoria then continued her vocal training and received her B.M. in Music Performance from Virginia Commonwealth University. While at VCU, she was cast in two of VCU’s spring Opera productions. Her most recent role was La Suora Zelatrice in Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica. She participated in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions: Mid Atlantic Region in 2017 and was selected to move on to the National level. Currently, Victoria works at SPARC – School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community and is a member of the Richmond Symphony Chorus.

The traditional (shorter) ending of Mark’s gospel concludes rather abruptly. Why is that? Is it possible that we are to continue the story? I’d like to explore how we see ourselves in the Easter Story and continue resurrection in our own lives and communities.

Palm Sunday has another name: Passion Sunday. There is the parade, and there is the realization of where that parade leads. The parade celebrating Jesus is a triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Yes, it is celebratory, but it is also a journey to his death. We may be tempted to go from waving our palm branches to shouting “He is risen!” on Easter Sunday, but that would be a mistake. There is spiritual blessing in taking the journey with Jesus to the cross.

Bible Verses: Psalm 51:1-12; John 12:20-33 | Libby Grammer

We are not God, and when we try to be, we fall into the pitfalls of sin. Thankfully, the nature of God is one of mercy toward us, God’s children. In the season of Lent, we focus on penitence, asking for forgiveness for sins, but we should also be deeply grateful for a God who seeks out relationship with us and offers forgiveness and grace. We are a fortunate people to worship such a God. That new point of view might make our Lenten journey a lot less about ourselves (and lack of chocolate) and a lot more about the God who seeks after us in covenant relationship.

Lenten Message from Dr. Theodore T. Brown, pastor-elect of Quioccasin Baptist Church, our closest neighboring African American congregation.
