During three consecutive Wednesday Evenings (January 20, 27, and February 3, 6:35-7:15 PM) we plan to study a few of the unique features of the gospel attributed to Doctor Luke, the physician also credited with much of the book we call the Acts (of the Apostles). Luke, unlike the brevity of our first available gospel (Mark), or the Jewish tradition emphasis in the Gospel of Matthew, delivers a more universal message that deliberately speaks to Gentiles. This gospel also gives a greater picture of women in Christ’s ministry and in discipleship, and preserves more parables than either of the other three gospels. For your preparation in our study, please begin reading the first few chapters of Luke, and identify two or three details in the “birth of Jesus narratives” that are only available in this rich account of the life of Jesus of Nazareth. I plan to lead us in “revisiting Luke” during these winter days.
