Wednesdays did not run away and hide during the summer months, but Wednesdays at River Road Church did. This summer we hosted food trucks and held Vespers on Tuesday evenings instead.

Wednesday evenings at River Road Church return September 3. We serve dinner from 5:30-6:15 p.m. Our adult program begins at 6:30 p.m. There is a full schedule for children’s choirs and missions activities, plus a time for youth to get together.

On September 3 the adult program will feature a presentation about the Chancel Choir’s week-long stint as choir-in-residence at Canterbury Cathedral. Several choir members will reflect on their experiences leading worship in one of Christendom’s holy sites. I have seen some of the pictures taken by choir members during the week, and they capture some of the magnificence of the place to go along with the memories of the experience.

Have you ever wanted to talk back to the preacher after listening to a sermon? The remaining weeks in September will be your opportunity. On Sunday mornings in September I will focus on the theme of spiritual discernment. Each week I will examine a facet of this theme. On the Wednesday evening that follows, I will use our adult program time to present additional material on spiritual discernment. Then I will lead a conversation about the content of the sermon and the Wednesday presentation.

This sermon series comes with the encouragement of the Committee on Missional and Spiritual Growth. The pastoral conversation format comes with the encouragement of the Board of Christian Education and Spiritual Formation.

A couple of hours together on Wednesday evenings allow us to be church in ways that do not happen on Sunday mornings. I hope you will start the final quarter of 2014 at church for dinner and conversations that matter.

Blessings,
Mike
