Sermon by Daniel Glaze
Complete Joy?
Complete Joy may strike us as an oxymoron (like jumbo shrimp or hot chili), but Jesus is clear that our joy comes through our connectedness—to God and one another.
Scripture Texts
Psalm 98
John 15:9-17
Music by the Chancel Choir
In the Heart Where Love is Abiding — John Barnard, Arr.
A New Commandment — Richard Shephard
This Sunday’s opening voluntaries and choral anthems are based on the theme of godly and human love. In the two movements of Langlais’s Suite Medievale, the composer uses three plainchant themes: Adoro te in “Improvisation”; and both Ubi caritas and Jesu dulcis memoria in “Meditation.” The chant, Adoro te, can be found as Hymn 519 in our hymnal; Jesu dulcis memoria, is found as Hymn 511. Ubi caritas (not in our hymnal) was most famously set as an unaccompanied motet by Maurice Durufle, although our choir will be singing an accompanied setting of this chant by John Barnard at Offertory this morning. The short anthem sung during the distribution of bread is also reflects God’s commandment that we love one another. The composer, Dr. Richard Shepherd, is the former Organist/Choirmaster at York Minster. The closing voluntary, translated “Festival,” is a celebration that could be considered a joyful reflection on the psalm for the day, Psalm 98.
Following worship there is a reception in the Fellowship Hall hosted by the deacons.
Everyone is invited to attend!
