Ascension Sunday
Service of Worship
11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary

Sermon by Daniel Glaze
“That They May Be One”
“That they may be one” (John 6:11). I’m not so sure we’re any more unified than when Jesus initially prayed this prayer. Was Jesus wasting his breath, or is unity possible for his followers today?

Scripture Texts
Acts 1:1-11
John 17:6-19

Music
If Ye Love Me — Thomas Tallis — Chancel and Youth Choirs
God is Gone Up — Gerald Finzi — Chancel Choir

We welcome Tom Bailey, who is the guest organist for Sunday’s closing voluntary. Tom is organist at Bon Air Baptist Church.

Messiaen’s “Outbursts of Joy” is the third of four movements from his Ascension Suite, a work originally written for orchestra in 1932, and rewritten for organ in 1933/34. The movement heard today was not part of the 1932 version: it composed to replace the third movement of the orchestral version. “Outbursts of Joy” is a jubilant fanfare-toccata that reflects its full title and its scripture inspiration, “Outbursts of joy from a soul before the glory of Christ which is its own glory”; “Giving thanks unto the father which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light . . . .  has raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (Colossians and Ephesians)

Following worship there is a reception in the Fellowship Hall hosted by the deacons.
Everyone is invited to attend!
