In their eighth season performing together, Violaine Michel and Hope Armstrong Erb have delighted audiences with their graceful musicianship and robust rhythmic style. The duo has played for the Virginia Music Teachers Association conference at Virginia Commonwealth University, and has been presented in concert series at the Richmond Public Library Gellman Room, Chester Presbyterian Church, Church of the Holy Comforter, Grace & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Westminster Canterbury Retirement Community, Bon Air Presbyterian Church Second Sunday South of the James, and Trinity Lutheran Church.
Violaine Michel is a passionate violin teacher and performer. She studied violin in her native France, graduated from the National Conservatory of Caen and continued her studies in Paris with Catherine Courtois and Régis Pasquier until she became a member of the Caen Orchestra and the Caen Chamber Music Association in Normandy. Her desire for new opportunities brought her to Montreal, Canada, where she joined several orchestras among which the Metropolitan Orchestra of Montreal under Yannick Nézet-Séguin. She now lives in Richmond where she enjoys taking part in the musical life of the city. She is a member of the Roanoke Symphony and regularly plays with the Richmond Symphony, the Virginia Symphony, Opera on the James, and the Williamsburg Symphony.
Hope Armstrong Erb, pianist, teacher, conductor, and composer, has performed on four continents, and is well known in the Richmond area as a chamber musician, playing frequently and enthusiastically with both instrumentalists and vocalists. Critics have proclaimed her “a wonder in her ability to maintain a high standard in both performance and teaching.” Hope maintains a private studio where she offers piano, theory, and composition lessons as well as vocal and instrumental coaching and accompanying. Many of her former students now enjoy successful careers as performers, composers and teachers. She has recorded with violinist Yoko Kato a critically acclaimed compact disc of chamber music for violin and piano, the sales of which benefit the Greater Richmond Children’s Choir. Hope was the artistic director of the GRCC from its inception in 1997 through June 2017 when she passed the baton to devote more time to piano performance. The YWCA named Hope the 2016 Outstanding Woman in the Arts, awarded for “significant achievement, leadership, impact on the community, and commitment to social equality.”
