You may have noticed CARITAS news has been quiet this fall as we are moving to a new model of helping in their expanding site. The men are now in a permanent facility on Dinwiddie Ave, which means they no longer have to pack all their belongings, move every week and limit their job options to the CARITAS bus schedules. This October, instead of CARITAS coming to RRCB, we will be serving a single dinner on one night for 200 people at their facility. This dinner will serve 3 segments of CARITAS for men; the emergency shelter, the Healing Place (a long-term recovery program) and the workforce program (training for re-entering the job market). In addition, our church will also prepare lunches over one week to the 32 men in the emergency shelter. Please bear with us as we readjust our volunteer needs and learn this great new model.
The women’s mobile shelter will be staying with us in February 2019, the same arrangement you have seen in the past where the guests will be staying overnight in our fellowship hall. Eventually, the women will also move to this new model once the CARITAS Center opens in 2020 (visit www.CARITASVA.org to see the new plans).
Currently we are in need of 5 people to assist Scott Leake in heating up and serving a wonderful dinner for 200 CARITAS clients on Saturday, October 27th from 3-5:30 (or however long you can stay). We realize this overlaps Trunk or Treat and we will revise the schedule next year. Please contact Laurie Gray if you can help at 804-998-3597 or laurie7anne@yahoo.com.
