Do you feel LED to go to Camp Alkulana?

Many who have been to Alkulana will remember “Big Lodge” which serves as the indoor basketball court. And with its big stone fireplace it can also be used for “campfire” time in rainy weather. The lighting in this very old wooden building has reached the end of its useful life. In fact, last summer one of those lights caught fire, and it was the fast action of the staff that kept the damage to a minimum. We want to upgrade the lighting to much safer, longer lasting LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology. We are planning a work day on Saturday, May 18 to begin this lighting upgrade. Of course, there will be plenty of other work to do, too.

Won’t you come along and join the River Road Team to help Camp Alkulana prepare for their campers this summer? If you are interested in participating, please contact Bill Rusher (brusher@rjatc.org or 804-285-1087).

Our own Fred Anderson writes these beautiful words in the Foreword to the book Come Along, Join Our Song which was recently published to help celebrate Camp Alkulana’s 100th Anniversary: “Camp Alkulana, the retreat set in rural Bath County which has provided a summertime experience for inner-city Richmond youth, turns one-hundred, and holds up its magical presence for the thousands of ‘Bright Eyes’ who have played on its grounds, splashed in its stream, fellowshipped in the cabins with newly made friends and, along the way, learned some of life’s best lessons. Camp Alkulana is a success story – a uniquely American, distinctly Christian, proudly Baptist story with its primary focus upon influencing the lives of one city’s youth. It is more than a place. It is a feeling.”
