Afton Tunnel Hike
Saturday, July 16, 2022
8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

The Afton Tunnel, which was completed in 1858 after nearly nine years of construction, becoming the longest tunnel in the United States, at 4700 feet long. It closed and was unused from 1944, when a parallel tunnel that could handle increased wartime traffic was opened, until it opened for walking in 2020.

You will need to bring a flashlight or headlamp as it is unlit inside. It stays cool like a cave and is damp inside. Shoes that can get wet and a light jacket may be helpful.

Trail Update:
In all, you will walk more than 3 miles on this flat, walking trail that is a neat experience you won’t want to miss.

Bus provided. Bring a picnic / bag lunch to enjoy after our Afton hike and a water bottle.

Depart from RRCB at 8:30 a.m. and return to RRCB about 3:00 p.m.
