Adult Wednesday Night Program
6:30 pm, December 4, Assembly Room

Facilitator: Seth Roberts

advent-spirituals-mary-babyThe African American spiritual represents a unique form in sacred music. It is a true coming together of African and European creativity with a value system that is based on the experience of African people enslaved on American soil. The melodies, rhythms, and structure of spirituals reveal the African roots of the people who gave them birth. The harmonies indicate the adaptation of the Africans to a place with new musical vocabulary. The theology of spirituals gives clues as to Africans’ perception of a God of mercy, justice, and love in a world of cruelty, injustice, and racism. We will listen to the songs and reflect on the beautiful harmonies, ponder the historical context that shaped their development, engage the Scriptures on which the lyrics are based, and then maybe even learn them to sing along!

Coming up on December 11:

  • Starlight Service of Remembrance
