Last year, we introduced River Road Reads, a summer book reading program where we invite everyone to read the same book over the summer and then provide opportunities in the fall to discuss the selection and various issues it raises. For our inaugural book read we read the New York Times bestseller and reading group favorite, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. This summer we are encouraging folks to read (or re-read) the great modern classic and prelude to The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Written for Professor Tolkien’s own children, The Hobbit met with instant acclaim when published. Said The Times, “One of the most influential books of our generation.” Join us as we journey on this high adventure there and back again.
Similarly to last year, we will provide events and opportunities for readers to learn more and have discussions. Dates are listed below, and more information will be available closer to the events. It is encouraged that children and youth read the book too!
