Weekend of Wonder
February 25-27, 2022
Wonder Through Sports
Samuel L. Adams is the Mary Jane and John F. McNair Chair in Biblical Studies at Union Presbyterian Seminary. He is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and has served churches in Chicago, New Haven, and Richmond. His research focuses primarily on wisdom literature. His first book (Wisdom in Transition: Act and Consequence in Second Temple Instructions) examined conceptions of retribution, death, and the afterlife in wisdom literature. Another research area is wealth and poverty in the biblical world and today. His second book (Social and Economic Life in Second Temple Judea: Westminster John Knox, 2014) looks at economic life in the Bible and beyond. Other interests include apocalypticism, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Bible and film, and the Bible and Christian theology in the context of American political discourse. He is editor of the seminary’s journal, Interpretation. Sam lives in Richmond with his wife Helen Bell Adams, a primary care physician, and they have two children. He also loves sports with an affinity for baseball.
Samuel is one of several excellent workshop leaders who will guide us on Saturday afternoon. Participants will have the opportunity to select two sessions out of seven selections. These will focus on a wide variety of topics and experiences because we know that each person experiences awe, joy, and wonder in different ways. The areas of focus are: science, photography, art, music, sports, movement and meditation, and poetry.
“Knowledge does not allow you to understand the world. Knowledge dispels the illusion that you understand the world.”
