His work covers the alliance between fiscal conservatives and the Religious Right within the Republican Party, as well as the rise of Tea Party activism. More recently, his study of religion and politics has extended to the growing role of atheism and skepticism in American politics and culture.

Dr. Meagher also is an expert observer of local and state politics in the capital city of Richmond, Virginia, and has commented on state politics during dozens of appearances on local television news programs. He has been quoted in the Richmond Times-Dispatch for his views on city government, and has published a number of op-eds in that paper. He writes about Virginia politics at his RVA Politics blog (rvapol.com).

In 2011, Dr. Meagher became the Director of Social Entrepreneurship at the College, teaching students to design innovative and systemic solutions to social problems. He is active in the field of service learning and changemaking, and has given numerous talks on the subject to lay audiences.

Dr. Meagher came to Randolph-Macon College in 2009, after teaching for two years at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City. Before that, he worked for 10 years in the non-profit world. He holds an MA in Philosophy and PhD in Political Science from the City University of New York.
