Title: Tsunami Memorial near Hikkaduwa

Notes: Bronze relief monument to the over 100,000 victims of the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December, 2004. This week’s reading of Exodus 17:1-7 describes the quarreling Israelites and their plea for water, ending with Moses testing God, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?” In times of terrible tragedy such as the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, we struggle to understand such loss in a world of God’s making. This bronze mural, so expressive of the horror, and yet of the strong desire to memorialize those lost, brings healing to those whose gift of life and response to that gift seem all the more significant.
